Dear Asian parents, let your adult offspring go free from your hands!

The more often the captain of a ship is in the tempest and difficult sailing the greater his knowledge becomes.

Abdu’l-Bahá, Star of the West, Vol. XIV, No. 2, p. 41

Indeed, the world is full of gloomy tales and darkest souls. The routes are dim-lightened and many wayward sons and daughters of evil would roam with thunder and lightning to undermine your offspring. Oblivion and confusion will come like a thief in the night. Dissatisfaction will appear like a friend who consoles. Grief and hatred will appear like soldiers that guard the nation from all vulnerability. You, who have endured it all, have shown fear and anxiety for their future. Hence, at all cost, you seek to manipulate their will for security.

Lest, you, o parents, fell into conundrum of sleepless grief, full of fear of the future. The beasts of the field and tame creatures that roamed thrive in the wilderness. An adult or an adolescent hidden in the bosom of their parents will be like a bird captured in the cage. A bird captured in the cage waits for its freedom for that freedom, the bird is nurtured under the providence of God. Verily, God who cares for His creation by common grace desires His creation to witness barbarity of this world that His creatures in suffering would progress in mind and soul towards His good and perfect will.

Maturity is not garnered by isolation nor extreme provision of the parents/guardians but in the brutality of the world that the loving God has created. A gold is not produced by mere protection of the caretakers but by the processes of torment in the fire and at the hands of blacksmiths and gold traders. So is a sculpture that captivates a heart of any who desires beauty. Precious item endured many trials and therefore, parents who deny trials to their offspring from their adolescence towards adulthood defy the Creator’s plan to nurture His creation in the stormy gale.

For the Creator is the harvester of His vineyard and the blacksmith of a jewelry, any parents that show anxiety and yearned for control over their grown offspring’s life suffer the wrath of God, to which, at the brink of their death, their grown offspring will remain in thought of a spoiled child who has embraced pessimism and cynicism; remaining fearful and useless in their lifetime.

As the bird yearns to be free, the adolescent and the adult find liberation in walking on their two feet searching for an identity apart from the gates of their shelter. The path of searching will be full of thorns and bushes but trusting God and His governance assures a sentient being in the path that the Most High has prepared for each and every person.

All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children. In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you.

Isaiah 54:13-14, English Standard Version (ESV) Bible

Rejoice, therefore, in the day they walk away. Anticipate the moment they leave the house and never be in touch again to trouble your weary souls. Pray that they will impact the world with the glorious splendor of God by their gifts. Fret not, but be joyous at the glad tidings they hold no burden to you as they choose spread their wings on their own. Let it be at your death or theirs, they are answerable to the Creator for their own.
